Eco-car parks up for Terra future
An experimental car with geographic information at the heart of its engine management system is to appear at the Terra future conference.
The vehicle, created as part of project Sentience, can ‘see’ beyond its natural horizon through the use of internet-enabled mobile phone communications, GPS technology and geographic information from Ordnance Survey.
The control system then uses that information to automatically optimise the speed and rate of acceleration and deceleration to maximizing fuel economy and lower carbon dioxide emissions.
Developed through as a collaboration between Ricardo, Jaguar-Land Rover, Transport Research Laboratory, Ordnance Survey and Orange Business Services, the Sentience project vehicle has so far shown fuel savings of between 5 and 24 per-cent.
The Sentience car and project experts will be at Terra future 2009 on both 24 and 25 February.
