As part of the activity leading to the Terra future event on the 24th and 25th of February 2009 the H-I Network - www.h-i.com - hosted a workshop entitled Driving Innovation with Geographic Information.

Delegates formed a number of discussion groups with equal numbers from each community in a facilitated discussion around practical joint uses of linked data and GI.
"Administrative units such as Wards, and Local Authority areas etc vary over time, but do not change their unique ID. Therefore users can attribute statistics to an incorrect geographical area. ONS (Office for National Statistics) are tackling this problem with a new system of admin area identifiers but the issue remains for any stats which should be related to previous geographical areas. One solution may be to set up a series of geographical areas for specific epochs, and also link stats to the time epoch they belong to."
After the idea generation for potential applications, the barriers which people detailed in the building these applications were discussed and some of the key barriers are detailed in the issues.pdf
